Orillia Kiwanis Music Festival 2012

School Choirs

The tentative schedule for the 2012 Festival is as follows:

Dates:Wednesday April 25, 2012
Venue:St. Paul’s United Church Sanctuary
Adjudicator:David Buley
Division contact:Blair Bailey (705-326-7548)

This division is for school choirs and ensembles. Duet and trio classes for untrained voices are also available for members of school choirs who have not studied with a private vocal teacher.

Please be sure to read all the rules and regulations. Also note the following:

  • The deadline for entries in this division is February 15th. Entries will not be accepted after this date.
  • Conductors or participants are asked to be prepared to announce the title and composer of their selected pieces.
  • Each member of all school choirs or ensembles must be from one designated school only. Choirs and ensembles with members from more than one school should refer to the Choral and the Drama divisions in this syllabus.
  • Please list the approximate number of students in the choir or ensemble on the back of the entry form.
  • Pieces may be transposed by one tone, up or down.
  • A chord may be given on the piano at the commencement of each piece of unaccompanied music.
  • Each participant may have a maximum of one minute on stage for warm-up.
  • All choirs and ensembles in these classes will receive an adjudication/comment sheet indicating a mark and a certificate indicating a standing as outlined in the General Rules section of this syllabus unless otherwise indicated under the class heading.. Scholarships will also be awarded at the adjudicator’s discretion.
  • The adjudicator may recommend a choir or ensemble which is felt to be of National standard to represent the Orillia Festival at the Ontario Provincial Music Festival competitions in one of four categories. If recommended, the choir selected would be requested to submit a good-quality CD recording of the same two selections performed in the class for which they were recommended. The recording must be done with the same conductor, accompanist and accompaniment as in the original performance and must be supervised and approved by a local Festival official. Arrangements for the recording sessions are the responsibility of the choir or ensemble selected. Note: To be recommended for the Provincial competition in Choral Speaking, participants must enter the appropriate classes in the Drama division. For more information regarding the criteria for possible recommendation, contact the Provincial Festival Liaison, Fran Richardson, at 705-325-1536 or visit the Ontario Music Festivals Association website: www.omfa.info.
  • Students with special needs are welcome to participate in these Festival classes. Teachers/Supervisors are encouraged to indicate on the entry form if the Participant has a special need. For more information, contact the Division Contact Person listed above
